Job Posting for: Circle of Care Program Clinic Prep Worker Part time

The Southern Ontario Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative is seeking a well organized, interpersonal self-motivated person with demonstrated knowledge and background in diabetes and foot care. The position is to assist the SOADI Circle of Care Team in organizing and maintaining the SOADI Foot Care Clinics. This position will be part of a network of Aboriginal diabetes support services for Southern Ontario.

Position Summary: It will be the responsibility of the Circle of Care Program Clinic Prep Worker to work closely alongside the SOADI Circle of Care Program Team and aid in Pre and Post Clinic duties and inventory.

Diabetes epidemic in Indigenous populations’ highlights disparity

‘The alarm was on. People started working on it. But somehow the snooze button got pressed’

About eight in 10 Indigenous Canadians who are young adults will develop Type 2 diabetes in their lifetimes compared with five in 10 in the general population, a new study suggests.

To make the projection published in Monday’s issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers in Alberta used data on a population of 2.8 million adults who were free of diabetes in the province and followed their health records for 20 years.

NORTHERN CIRCLE OF CARE PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Position Summary

The Circle of Care Program Assistant will work closely with the Coordinator to plan, deliver, and follow up with community based foot care events. The assistant will network with diabetes education programs, foot care event hosts, service providers, clinicians, Indigenous practitioners and program partners.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist in coordinating and implementing SOADI Foot Care events throughout Northern Ontario
  • Share educational information and resources on diabetes and foot care to Indigenous communities and individuals
  • Assist the Circle of Care Coordinator in registering practitioners into the program
  • Update and edit the program resource directory with new contacts and health service providers
  • Assist Circle of Care Coordinator in processing foot care treatment subsidies and updating clinic client information,

SOADI Shawl Making

On September 12th, 2016 SOADI Central delivered a shawl making workshop at the Wahta Cultural Centre.

During the workshop, SOADI Central spoke about our bodies being sacred and how we only have one body therefore it is so imperative to take care of it. The Wahta community members made their own shawls during the workshop. SOADI Central talked about having an open mind, being positive and putting those good thoughts into their shawls while creating them.

The Latest in Yoga News at SOADI

On Sunday, August 21/2016 SOADI hosted a yoga retreat themed, “Poise of the Trees” at the beautiful site of Kanata Village, in Brantford. 

This event was a joy to deliver and engage in!  I was joined by 9 participants who embraced the opportunity to enjoy gentle exploration of the balancing effect of hatha yoga through simple postures that provide both ease and challenge.  Each person was encouraged to celebrate their uniqueness and practice yoga free from judgement and expectation.
